October 23, 1956; there is no other event in Hungarian history that has caused such a stir on the stage of world history. For a few weeks, the whole world focused on and stood up for Hungary. Thousands of people demonstrated in support of Hungarians in major European cities; the Pope issued an encyclical calling for prayer in support of the Freedom Fight, and Time magazine named the Hungarian freedom fighter its “Man of the Year.” John F. Kennedy commemorated the event a year later, saying that October 23, 1956, was “the day that shook the world – a day that will forever live in the annals of free men and free nations – a day of courage and of conscience and of triumph … No other day has shown more clearly the eternal unquenchability of man's desire to be free, whatever the odds against success, whatever the sacrifice required of him.” Why this special attention?
