I spent the night in a 155yr old Railway Station! - Rydal NSW

Step back in time and experience one of Australia’s most unique railway stays, the beautifully preserved Rydal Railway Station in the quiet hills of the NSW Central Tablelands. Located 181 km from Sydney, this heritage listed station has stood since 1870. Today, it remains almost completely unchanged and remarkably, you can stay the night inside the original Station Master’s residence! In this documentary, I spend a full night at Rydal to capture the sights, sounds, stories, and surprises of this rare accommodation. Complete with coal fire heating, vintage furnishings, old school entertainment (hello DVD and VHS!), and minimal phone reception, it’s a stay designed to make you unplug, slow down, and enjoy the simple rhythm of passing trains. With most freight movements running overnight and passenger services only stopping a handful of times per day, you often have the entire station and its atmosphere totally to yourself! Along the way, we explore Rydal village, its 19th century streetscape, and its connection to classic Australian railway culture, including its cameo in the 1974 film A Steam Train Passes. This whole region is a treasure trove for anyone with rails in their veins.
