my Ecuadorian girlfriend thinks it's wack when gringos wear ponchos. I pretended to agree, but deep down I know I would love to have one draped over my shoulders as I followed the line on my google maps leading me to the historic center, walking through the unfamiliar streets of a south American city, smiling and offering a quiet, yet assured "hola" to every person I make eye contact with. I see them, the so called "gringos" walking around, wearing their freshly purchased colorful latino style robe from some market they visited earlier, with a type of content look on their face that suggests they are completely assured in themselves and don't care what anyone thinks about them. I wonder how people end up with that trait. does it come from a lifetime of overcoming obstacles, realizing your shortcomings through meticulous self reflection, and doing your best to correct those personality flaws in order to become the best version of yourself you can be? did they arrive there through a concentrated effort of personal development and character growth, saying to themselves sure, maybe I have a pile of regrets and mistakes I've made in life, but instead of just ignoring it or suffocating under its weight I'm going to climb to the top of it and enjoy the view from here with my brand new poncho on, drinking a cerveza with a name I can't correctly pronounce yet. maybe the topic never came up in their heads at all. maybe they were born that way. whatever the answer may be, I know ill never enjoy life as much as the gringo I saw on this day riding by through the thick crowd on an electric scooter with a jbl speaker strapped across his chest blaring Despacito as it bounced against his brand new poncho with a big smile on his face. I suppose I dont have to feel what he felt myself to appreciate its beauty. to watch the American dream of emotional freedom and self liberation live on in different countries all across the world is enough for me. sorry for the sound of my breathing in some parts of the video.
