Vitaminas para melhorar a visão - funcionam ? ?

Is there any vitamin or supplement that can improve vision? In this video, Dr. Mário Bulla, an ophthalmologist specializing in retina, will answer this extremely interesting question asked by one of our viewers, and which is also very frequent here in the office. Almost every day, a patient asks if there is any vitamin or supplement that can improve their vision, and many of them comment that both on the internet and even on television, advertisements frequently appear offering vitamin supplements, giving the idea that when a person takes this type of supplement, their vision will improve. Is this true? A while ago I made a very interesting video about the use of vitamins in age-related macular degeneration, and in this other video, which I'll leave the link here in the description, I talk about a very famous study called AREDS, and also about its continuation, AREDS 2, which shows that people who have age-related macular degeneration, especially in moderate to severe stages, experience a reduction of around 25 percent in the progression of the disease when they use specific vitamin supplements for this disease, which includes, for example, some vitamins, minerals, and lutein. However, it is very important to emphasize that these studies, both AREDS 1 and AREDS 2, showed some benefit from the use of this type of medication only in people who already had age-related macular degeneration, and in people who did not have this disease or who had very early stages, the use of supplementation had no benefit. Of course, we often hear about people who used a certain medication, sometimes even a certain tea, some vitamin, and ended up improving their vision. But we can't forget that there's the so-called placebo effect, that is, many times a person, believing in something, will end up feeling really better. But I, as a doctor, am obliged to bring the scientific view to this issue, and there is no scientific study showing improvement in vision when vitamin supplementation is used. That is, it's no use taking vitamins and thinking that we're going to see better. Similarly, vitamins don't prevent or improve cataracts, and they don't improve the retina or glaucoma except in those specific cases of age-related macular degeneration where vitamin supplementation is specifically indicated. Of course, it's very important to emphasize that if a person has a vitamin deficiency, meaning they are lacking some nutrient in their body, then yes, supplementation is important to regulate normal vitamin levels. However, generally, if a person has an adequate diet and some sun exposure, this type of supplementation is not necessary. In any case, when a person has a vitamin deficiency, they should consult a doctor, who will indicate the correct treatment. To summarize, then, there is no scientific evidence that the use of vitamin supplements can improve our vision. If you have any doubts about this, it is very important to consult an ophthalmologist and clarify this situation. Thank you to everyone who watched. This video and its comments are not a substitute for medical consultation and are for educational purposes only. They should not be used for decision-making; for that, an in-person consultation with a specialist physician is necessary.
