In this walking tour, I take you through the scenic streets, along the River Shannon, and straight to the door of the extraordinary Costello Memorial Chapel: just 16 feet by 12 feet, the smallest chapel in Europe and reputedly the second smallest in the entire world! But this isn't just a tiny building. It's a love story carved in stone. In 1879, local businessman Edward Costello built this Gothic chapel as an eternal resting place for his beloved wife, Mary Josephine, who died at just 46. He spared no expense — bath stone walls, a marble altar, stained glass windows, and lead-lined coffins visible beneath specially made glass floors. Edward himself was later laid to rest beside her. The town gave him the largest funeral Carrick-on-Shannon had ever seen. Ireland's own Taj Mahal. Hidden in plain sight.
