The accident occurred on March 20th of this year on the southbound lane of the Shin-Meishin Expressway in Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture. A large truck rear-ended a passenger car stopped in traffic, causing three cars to burst into flames. Six people, including Takamine, who was on his way home for the holidays, and five other family members, were killed. The driver of the large truck, Mizutani Mizuyo (54), is charged with negligent driving resulting in death. In the trial that began in June, it was pointed out that she was using her smartphone while driving for 13 seconds, causing the accident. Standing before the altar, Mr. Takamine's wife and his three sons—eldest, second, and fourth—gave their prayers. On July 20th, the third monthly anniversary of his death, they spoke to the media for the first time, revealing their feelings. Mr. Takamine's wife: "He was someone who always had so many things he wanted to do. He was good at everything and had a pleasant demeanor." Eldest son: "He was a father with great initiative, always working for the benefit of others, so he was someone I admired." Second son: "I caused my father some trouble, but he was always kind, and he would get angry when necessary. I wanted to live my life like him." The 20-year-old fourth son wears a pendant with his father's picture on it. Fourth son: "He was always close by, so no matter what I do, I want him to be watching over me nearby. Most of all, I want to feel my father's presence close by." Mr. Takamine returned to his family almost every week, diligently coaching the volleyball team. Even after four months, the family is still struggling to accept the reality. Fourth son: "Since March 20th, I've felt like time has stopped, and I've lived like this until today. If possible, I really want my family, my precious father, back." Takamine's wife: "At the first hearing, when I saw (the defendant) in person for the first time, I really wanted him back. If that wasn't dangerous driving, then what is? Can you drive without looking ahead for 13 seconds? Normally, you can't, right? I want him to tell the truth honestly, without lying. I think that's one of the first ways he can atone."
