A century ago, early settlers massively cleared wild eucalyptus trees to expand cropland. This destroyed the delicate natural balance. Centuries-old trees acted as powerful biological pumps, retaining groundwater deep underground. The eucalyptus root system absorbed colossal amounts of moisture. Without forests, groundwater levels began to rise rapidly, pushing ancient salt to the surface. Fertile soil turned into lifeless white salt flats. The destruction of vegetation led to the withering of once-thriving agricultural lands. The salt crust is eroding house foundations, ruining roads, and turning freshwater bodies into dangerous brine. The famous freshwater lake, Lake Toolibin, has been damaged. Rising saltwater levels have pushed the reserve's unique ecosystem to the brink of collapse, wiping out freshwater organisms and rare birds. Authorities attempted to use mechanical pumps and deep wells to extract brine, but the expensive equipment quickly rusted and deteriorated in the harsh chemical environment. The region's only salvation was a large-scale government reforestation program that utilizes the natural properties of plants. The alley farming project involves planting mallee shrubs in narrow strips right in the middle of wheat fields. Mallee trees possess a unique underground root system called a lignotuber and powerful roots extending to depths of over ten meters. Biological pumps intercept water, forcing the salt to retreat. Wheatbelt farmers earn carbon credits and additional income by processing eucalyptus shoots into valuable oil and biofuel. In the most challenging areas, agronomists are planting saltbush, a plant used as livestock feed. Restoring balance is slow, but it is the only way to stop the desert's advance.
