Made famous by Count Basie and His Orchestra in 1938, the tune became synonymous with energy, joy, jam circles, and the social spirit of swing dance culture. The title refers to the Woodside Hotel in New York, where Basie’s band often stayed while performing in Harlem. Count Basie was one of the most influential African American bandleaders and pianists of the 20th century. His music helped shape the sound of swing and inspired generations of dancers.
