Geriatric Considerations and Colorectal Surgery

Julia Berian, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison. Dr. Berian completed her medical degree and surgical residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center, followed by colorectal surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She completed a research fellowship as the James C. Thompson Geriatric Surgery Research Fellow (2014-2017) at the American College of Surgeons (ACS), contributing to the development of the ACS Geriatric Surgery Verification program. She earned a master’s degree in Health Services and Outcomes Research from Northwestern University. Dr. Berian joined the faculty at UW- Madison in 2020. Her research, supported by a career development award (NIA, K23 AG081487), aims to improve surgical care for older adults by applying systems engineering and implementation science methods in perioperative care.
