June 22, 2026, became a shocking milestone for the Vietnamese diaspora when Hung Cao, Acting Secretary of the U.S. Navy, shook hands with General Secretary and President To Lam in Hanoi and said that the past should be left behind to look towards the future. Just two months earlier, the pro-Vietnamese community across America had celebrated his appointment to the highest civilian position in the U.S. Navy. From Little Saigon to Houston, from Virginia to San Jose, tears of pride flowed. Everyone believed that finally, after half a century of exile, the community had the strongest voice in Washington. But Hung Cao's return to Vietnam reversed everything. His handshake with General Phan Van Giang at the Ministry of Defense, the state reception with General Secretary To Lam, and his visit to his ancestral home in Quang Tri, where his father, Cao Van Quan, was born and raised, all shattered the seventy-day dream of the pro-Vietnamese community in a single afternoon. In this video, we journey together through Hung Cao's entire life, from a four-year-old boy leaving Saigon in 1975 on a refugee flight, through Guam, to the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School and the United States Naval Academy.
