"Crossing the Bridge of the Continent: The Extreme Challenge of the Bering Strait, Part 2" (Aired on June 13, 2012) The Bering Strait, a vast ice sheet rifted apart and bursting with dark waters, is an icy sea between Siberia and Alaska. Also known as the gateway to the Arctic Ocean, the Bering Strait allows Arctic ice masses to flow into the Pacific Ocean. "The Bering Strait is a floating mass of ice. If you feel yourself drifting away, you have to wake up, pack up your tent, and move across the ice. It's a dynamic and resilient place." Because of the extreme cold of around -30 degrees Celsius, blizzards, the omnipresent threat of polar bears, and the presence of drift ice, over 20 expeditions have attempted this crossing since the 1980s, but each has failed. While a Russian team in 1989 and a British team in 1990 reportedly succeeded, the details of their crossings remain unofficial. However, on February 28th, a South Korean expedition team, after a six-day, five-night, nonstop march of 180 kilometers, officially succeeded in crossing the Bering Strait for the first time in the world. The team included Captain Hong Seong-taek, a "Four-Pole Grand Slammer" who has conquered Mount Everest, the South Pole, the North Pole, and now Greenland; member Jeong Chan-il, who has conquered both the North Pole and the "two poles" of Mount Everest; and members Choi Jae-young and Jeong Yi-chan, who were embarking on their first polar expedition. The four expedition members continued to walk across the Bering Sea ice sheet drifting toward the Pacific Ocean, occasionally encountering polar bears and encountering perils as they crossed the reeds (the gaps in the ice where the seawater is exposed). Crossing the International Date Line, the center of the Bering Sea, they were caught in a 200-meter-per-second blizzard and a massive ice floe, which put them on the brink of death. Their historic success hinged on the advice of the late Captain Park Young-seok, who was the first Korean to attempt and failed to cross the Bering Strait. Captain Park, who disappeared on Annapurna last year, attempted the Bering Strait in March 2007, but was swept away by strong north winds just 20 kilometers from his destination, ultimately failing. "Brother Young-seok told us to push through, day or night, no matter what. Had I not listened, I think we would have drifted into the Pacific Ocean as well."
