The number of vacationers in Zanzibar has more than doubled since the Covid crisis. Having become a leading destination, the archipelago is expected to welcome nearly one million visitors per year by 2024. But this explosion in tourism comes with challenges for the islands. Everywhere, concrete is replacing coconut palms, a spectacular growth that allows many to make a living from tourism, but which has endangered marine life. Heaps of garbage from hotel complexes are also piling up in illegal dumps, affecting groundwater and polluting water supplies.
