Chronic teacher shortages and increased sickness absences have pushed schools to rely heavily on supply agencies, costing the education system nearly £1.4bn in the last year alone. One headteacher told Sky News it can cost schools upwards of £200 a day for a "decent supply teacher", with schools "being held over a barrel" for some specialist subjects.
