*PRONOUN (सर्वनाम) – Complete Description for Competitive Exams (CTET, UPTET, DSSSB, SSC, Railway, UP Police & All Competitive Exams)* PRONOUN (सर्वनाम) *Definition (परिभाषा):* A *Pronoun* is a word that is used in place of a noun to avoid repetition and make sentences more meaningful and attractive. *Hindi Meaning:* *Pronoun (सर्वनाम)* वह शब्द है जो *Noun (संज्ञा)* के स्थान पर प्रयोग किया जाता है ताकि बार-बार उसी संज्ञा का प्रयोग न करना पड़े। Examples: Ram is a good boy. *He* is very honest. Sita is reading. *She* is reading a novel. Mohan and Rohan are friends. *They* play together. The book is interesting. *It* is very useful. --- Why Do We Use Pronouns? Pronouns make our language: Easy to understand Short and effective Attractive Free from unnecessary repetition Without Pronoun Rahul is a doctor. Rahul lives in Lucknow. Rahul helps poor people. With Pronoun Rahul is a doctor. *He* lives in Lucknow. *He* helps poor people. --- Types of Pronouns There are **10 major types of Pronouns**. 1. Personal Pronoun Personal Pronouns refer to persons or things. Subject Pronouns I We You He She It They Object Pronouns Me Us You Him Her It Them Examples: I am a student. She is singing. They are playing cricket. The teacher called me. He helped us. --- Person Chart First Person I We Me Us Second Person You You Third Person He She It They Him Her It Them --- 2. Possessive Pronoun These pronouns show ownership. Examples: Mine Yours His Hers Its Ours Theirs Examples This pen is mine. That house is ours. The red bag is hers. --- Possessive Adjectives My Your His Her Its Our Their Example: My book Your pen His car Their house --- Difference This book is **mine**. This is *my* book. Mine = Pronoun My = Adjective --- 3. Reflexive Pronoun When the subject and object are the same person. Words: Myself Yourself Himself Herself Itself Ourselves Yourselves Themselves Examples I hurt myself. She introduced herself. They enjoyed themselves. --- 4. Emphatic Pronoun Used for emphasis. Examples I myself completed the work. The Principal himself attended the meeting. She herself solved the problem. --- Difference Between Reflexive and Emphatic Reflexive: He blamed himself. Emphatic: He himself completed the work. --- 5. Demonstrative Pronoun Points out persons or things. This That These Those Examples This is my mobile. Those are beautiful flowers. That is a hospital. These are my friends. --- Difference This book is good. "This" = Adjective This is good. "This" = Pronoun --- 6. Interrogative Pronoun Used to ask questions. Who Whom Whose Which What Examples Who are you? Whose bag is this? What happened? Which is your car? Whom did you call? --- 7. Relative Pronoun Joins two clauses. Who Whom Whose Which That Examples The boy who won the prize is my cousin. This is the book that I bought. The girl whose father is a doctor is my friend. --- 8. Indefinite Pronoun Refers to an unspecified person or thing. Someone Anyone Everyone Nobody Everybody Anybody Nothing Everything Something Each Either Neither One Many Few Several Examples Everyone is present. Someone is knocking. Nobody came. Everything is ready. --- 9. Distributive Pronoun Refers to persons or things one at a time. Each Either Neither Examples Each of the boys received a prize. Either of the answers is correct. Neither of them came. --- 10. Reciprocal Pronoun Shows mutual relationship. Each other One another Examples They love each other.
