KIA: From a Brand the World Mocking to a Global Design Icon — A 20-Year Miracle. How did a brand once ridiculed as a "cheap Korean car" transform into the world's premier automotive design icon? Starting as a bicycle parts manufacturer in 1944, Kia began its journey to becoming a global automaker by transitioning its business from motorcycles to automobiles over several decades. However, the real miracle occurred much later. In 1994, Kia made a bold decision. At a time when most domestic car brands used shades of blue, Kia daringly adopted the "Red Oval Logo," which subsequently became a symbol imprinting Kia in the minds of consumers worldwide for the next 25 years. Then, in 2021, a new logo that shook the world emerged. Kia's new logo took the form of an angular signature connecting three letters, sparking controversy for resembling "KN." It garnered global attention, recording over 30,000 monthly searches for "KN car" at one point. Even the controversy has become brand power. Fast Company: The fruits of design innovation are also proven by awards. At the World Car Awards held at the 2024 New York International Auto Show, the Kia EV9 swept two categories simultaneously: 'World Car of the Year' and 'World Electric Vehicle'. By winning IDEA 2024 Gold, following the Red Dot 'Best of the Best' and iF Design Gold, the Kia EV9 achieved a 'Grand Slam' by sweeping all three of the world's major design awards.
