Ding Liren’s Powerful Catalan Opening! || Ft. Magnus Carlsen, Hans Niemann, Alireza Firouzja! 🔔 Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS for more chess opening videos! 🙂 Ding Liren is one of the strongest chess grandmasters in the world. He is famous for winning the chess world championship match in 2022 vs Ian Nepomniachtchi, and as I write this he is getting ready to defend his title in November 2024 against Gukesh D! Ding Liren plays many different openings as White and Black, but one of his absolute favorites is the Catalan Opening as White. In fact, the Catalan forms the foundation of his entire opening repertoire for White after 1.d4! So what is the Catalan Opening? The Catalan Opening is a world-class opening for White that usually occurs after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 d5 4.Bg2. Of course it is also possible to go 3.Nf3 and then 4.g3, or even to start with the move 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 and later transpose to the Catalan, but this is Ding Liren’s preferred move order! In this video I cover 8 of Ding Liren’s BEST games in the Catalan Opening as White. I cover all of Black’s major responses in great depth, including: 2 games in the “Classical” variation with 4…Be7 from Black. 2 games in the “Closed” variation with 4…Bb4+ from Black. 4 games in the “Open” variation with 4…dxc4 from Black. This video is designed to cover Ding Liren’s COMPLETE opening repertoire as White with the Catalan. If you watch till the very end of this video, you will understand exactly how Ding Liren likes to respond to all of Black’s major defensive setups in the Catalan Opening! Of course these games also feature some of the world’s strongest grandmasters defending from the Black side, including Magnus Carlsen, Hans Niemann, Alireza Firouzja, and more! Here are the games covered in the video: Game #1 - Ding Liren (2799) Vs Magnus Carlsen (2847), Goldmoney Asian Rapid KO 2021 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 d5 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.0-0 dxc4 7.Qc2 a6 8.a4 Bd7 9.Qxc4 Bc6 10.Bg5 h6 11.Bxf6 Bxf6 12.Rd1 Bd5 13.Qc2 a5 14.e4 Bc6 15.Nc3 Na6 16.h4 Nb4 17.Qe2 g6 18.Rd2 Qe7 19.Re1 Rad8 20.Qd1 Bg7 21.h5 g5 22.d5 Bd7 23.Nd4 Bxd4 24.Rxd4 e5 25.Rd2 g4 26.Nb5 Qg5 27.Re3 Rc8 28.Rc3 Qxh5 29.Nxc7 Qg5 30.b3 h5 31.d6 Rfd8 32.Bf1 Kg7 33.Bb5 Bc6 34.Bxc6 Nxc6 35.Ne8+ Kf8 36.d7 Rb8 37.Rd6 Nd4 38.Rxd4 exd4 39.Qxd4 Rxd7 40.Qxd7 Rxe8 41.Qxb7 Qe5 42.Rc8 Rxc8 43.Qxc8+ Kg7 44.Qc4 Qa1+ 45.Kg2 Qf6 46.Qd5 h4 47.gxh4 Qxh4 48.Qxa5 Qh3+ 49.Kg1 Qxb3 50.Qe5+ Kf8 51.a5 Qa3 52.Qg5 Qb4 53.Qf5 Qa3 54.Qc8+ Ke7 55.a6 g3 56.Qb7+ Kf6 57.a7 Qc1+ 58.Kg2 gxf2 59.Qb6+ Ke7 60.Qxf2 Qg5+ 61.Kh3 Qa5 62.Kg4 Qa1 63.Qc5+ Kf6 64.Qc6+ Kg7 65.a8Q Qg1+ 66.Kf5 Game #2 - Ding Liren (2745) Vs Hans Niemann (2711), World Team Rapid 2024 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 d5 4.Bg2 Be7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.0-0 dxc4 7.Qc2 b5 8.a4 Bb7 9.axb5 a6 10.bxa6 Nxa6 11.Qxc4 Bd5 12.Qc3 Ne4 13.Qe1 c5 14.Be3 Nb4 15.Rxa8 Qxa8 16.Nc3 Nxc3 17.bxc3 Nc2 18.Qd2 Nxe3 19.Qxe3 cxd4 20.cxd4 Rd8 21.Qf4 Bf6 22.e3 h6 23.h4 Rc8 24.Ne1 Re8 25.Bxd5 Qxd5 26.Qf3 Qc4 27.Qe4 Rc8 28.Nd3 Qb5 29.Ra1 g6 30.Kg2 Qd7 31.h5 g5 32.Rb1 Qc6 33.Qxc6 Rxc6 34.Rb7 Rc2 35.Nc5 Kf8 36.g4 Ra2 37.Kf3 Rc2 38.Nd3 Rd2 39.Rb3 Be7 40.Ke4 Kg7 41.f3 Bd6 42.Ne5 Rf2 43.Nd3 Rd2 44.Rc3 Re2 45.Ne5 Rf2 46.Nc4 Bg3 47.Rb3 Rc2 48.Ne5 Rf2 49.Nc6 Rc2 50.d5 Kf6 51.Rb6 Bf2 52.dxe6 Rc3 53.exf7 Rxe3+ 54.Kd5 Kxf7 55.Ra6 Rd3+ 56.Ke4 Re3+ 57.Kd5 Rd3+ 58.Kc4 Rd1 59.Ne5+ Kg7 60.Rg6+ Kh7 61.Nf7 Rd4+ 62.Kb5 Rf4 63.Nxh6 Rxf3 64.Nf5 Bh4 65.Rg7+ Kh8 66.h6 Rb3+ 67.Kc5 Bf2+ 68.Kd5 Rb5+ 69.Ke4 Game #3 - Ding Liren (2742) Vs Grzegorz Gajewski (2659), Chess Olympiad 2014 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Bb4+ 4.Bd2 Be7 5.Bg2 d5 6.Nf3 0-0 7.0-0 c6 8.Qc2 Nbd7 9.Rd1 b6 10.b3 a5 11.Bc3 Ba 12.Nbd2 b5 13.e4 bxc4 14.bxc4 Nxe4 15.Nxe4 dxe4 16.Ne5 f5 17.Nxc6 Qe8 18.Bxa5 Nf6 19.d5 Bb7 20.Nxe7 Qxe7 21.Bc3 exd5 22.Rab1 Rf7 23.Bxf6 Qxf6 24.cxd5 Rd8 25.d6 Ba6 26.Qc6 Bd3 27.Rxd3 exd3 28.Bd5 Kf8 29.Bxf7 Qxf7 30.Rd1 Qxa2 31.Qc Qa8 32.d7 d2 33.Rxd2 Qa1+ 34.Kg2 Qf6 35.Re2 f4 36.Qc5+ Kf7 37.Qh5+ Qg6 38.Qd5+ Kf8 39.Re5 fxg3 40.hxg3 Game #4 - Ding Liren (2805) Vs Anish Giri (2763), Candidates Tournament 2024 Game #5 - Ding Liren (2777) Vs Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2799), Huaian IMSA blitz 2017 Game #6 - Ding Liren (2762) Vs Alireza Firouzja (2737), Norway Chess 2024 Game #7 - Ding Liren (2777) Vs Wang Hao (2709), Huaian IMSA blitz 2017 Game #8 - Ding Liren (2799) Vs Jaime Santos Latasa (2608), San Fermin Masters Final 2021 (Games 4-8 were too long, so I could not squeeze in the moves in the YouTube description).
