It is famous for its natural beauty and the engineering solutions found to cross the Serra do Mar. The Rodovia dos Imigrantes was built during the period of the military regime in Brazil. The work began in 1974 and was inaugurated on December 28, 1976, during the government of General Ernesto Geisel, who was President of the Republic at the time. The construction was led by DER-SP (São Paulo Highway Department) and ECOVIAS, the concessionaire responsible for the highway to this day.
