Kotak MF CIO Harsha Upadhyay on Market Consolidation, Earnings Recovery & Midcap Bets

Are Indian markets entering a consolidation phase? In this conversation with Moneycontrol, Harsha Upadhyay, CIO at Kotak Mutual Fund, shares his outlook on the market, earnings trajectory and investment strategy going ahead. He believes the market is likely to remain in a consolidation zone in the near term, with earnings recovery expected from Q2 onwards. However, he also cautions that a large part of this recovery may already be reflected in current stock prices. Upadhyay points out that largecap stocks are currently trading at a discount to their long-term average valuations, while the excess froth seen in midcaps has moderated. At this stage, he advises investors to remain diversified across both largecap and midcap stocks. On sectoral preferences, he remains positive on industrials, defence, power ancillary, renewables, NBFCs and mid-sized banks. He also says that upcoming large IPOs should not be a concern for market demand, as long as pricing remains reasonable.
