Scenes from 2023 Feok Festival - Sandema, Ghana

The Builsa's 2023 FIOK FESTIVAL held in Upper East Region of Ghana 🇬🇭. The Builsa/Bulsa people of northern Ghana established the festival in 1974. The goal was to unify the tribe and promote/preserve their cultural heritage. The event commemorates the defeat of the notorious slave raider Babatu in 1897. On March 14th of that year, Bulsa warriors under the leadership of Ameria and French soldiers under the command of Julien Chanoine fought Babatu and his hundreds of raiders at Kanjaga. They captured 300 prisoners and sent Babatu fleeing to Yendi. (More info in BULUK journal Vol.3's "The First Europeans in the Bulsa Area" by anthropologist Franz Kröger - https://www.buluk.de/FirstEuropeans-o... ) The Bulsa warriors perform a war dance at the festival while sporting buffalo horned caps and brandishing axes and bows. They wear smocks covered with magical amulets and their wild, erratic movements imitate those of buffalo. It is quite a sight!
