Dr. Smith describes his training and association with Howard Naffziger. He furnishes a detailed depiction of his long-time friend, the Harvey Cushing Society's first president, William P. Van Wagenen. Dr. Smith reads many letters between Dr. Van Wagenen and Dr. Cushing to characterize their personalities.
