Erlesenes Ostpreußen: Dr. Werner Irro über „Eine lange Flucht aus Ostpreußen“

In 1945, the German history of East Prussia came to an end. The memory of the land and its people lives on in its remarkably diverse literary heritage. East Prussia produced important authors, still known to a wide audience today, such as Johann Gottfried Herder, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Siegfried Lenz, Marion Dönhoff, Johannes Bobrowski, and Arno Surminski. Even after 1945, numerous books exploring East Prussia and its legacy were published in Germany, Poland, Russia, and Lithuania. In our series "Selected East Prussia," we would like to present particularly worthwhile novels, memoirs, poems, and non-fiction works that will help you get to know East Prussia and its past and present inhabitants better. Well-known classics alternate with lesser-known authors. Today, Dr. Werner Irro presents "A Long Escape from East Prussia" by Gunter Nitsch. Nitsch recounts the story of his family, who fled across the frozen Vistula Lagoon in February 1945 to escape the Red Army, only to fall into Russian hands in Palmnicken on the Baltic Sea instead of reaching the West. The heroes of this remembrance are his grandfather and the women of the family. The book reads like an adventure novel, but it was a tragic reality. The foreword was written by Arno Surminski. Werner Irro, born in 1955, earned his doctorate in German Studies and Philosophy with a dissertation on literary criticism. After various positions as an editor, including at Rowohlt Publishers, he founded the Wort-Institut (Word Institute) in Hamburg in 2004. He works as a freelance editor for various publishers, including Ellert + Richter Publishers in Hamburg. He is also active as an author and ghostwriter and edits books, most recently a collection of Hamburg poems published by Junius Publishers.
