Yousef Alsayed: Rethinking Education in Saudi Arabia With Mentorship & AI

What does it take to rebuild education from the inside, while still a university student? In this episode of the Saudi Venture Hub Podcast, host Dagmara Kowalik sits down with Yousef Alsayed, entrepreneur and founder of AILA, an AI-powered adaptive learning platform built for the Arabic curriculum and the next generation of Saudi learners. Yousef's path started at 14, learning business alongside his father, and led him to KFUPM, a summer exchange in Silicon Valley, and a decision to drop everything and build a company before finishing his degree. Ayla started with a research question: how do you actually understand the brain of a student? The answer became a knowledge graph engine that maps learning gaps across an entire curriculum, not just the last wrong answer, and delivers personalized content at the right pace, in Arabic first. Today, Ayla is operating across dozens of schools in Saudi Arabia, has closed a $1.25 million seed round led by the founder of one of the US benchmark companies in the space, and is closing a second round with significant local investor participation. In this conversation, Dagmara and Yousef explore: → Why Silicon Valley founders aim for 100 billion, and what that mindset gap means for Saudi startups → The knowledge graph approach to adaptive learning, and why GPS-style trial-and-error is not enough → Building AI in Arabic, and the structural challenges of a curriculum without granular scaffolding → The innovate-then-regulate philosophy and working with the National E-Learning Center to build an AI sandbox → Why Saudi VCs passed, how a chance encounter in a parking garage changed everything, and what finally unlocked local investment → The real language of investor pitches: why revenue growth speaks louder than the problem you are solving → How Saudi Arabia's education budget, school privatization targets, and the push to 2 million private sector students by 2030 are reshaping the market → Why foreign companies consistently get Saudi Arabia wrong, and what commitment actually looks like on the ground → The Alpha Schools model and what Yousef wants Vision 2040 to say about how children learn → The ambition to become the Pearson or Common Core of the next generation, globally Chapters: 00:00 Welcome 00:56 Introducing Yousef and the founding of AILA 02:30 The Silicon Valley exchange and the AI early days 03:41 Silicon Valley mindset vs Saudi startup culture 05:19 Why the Saudi market is still early and what that means 06:55 What Ayla is actually building and how it works 08:29 The knowledge graph approach to personalized learning 09:10 Gaps in the Saudi curriculum and how Ayla mapped them 10:44 The most exciting and most challenging parts of building in EdTech 12:16 Navigating data, regulation, and the AI sandbox 13:59 Raising money: the first $140,000 and the first client 15:24 Growing to eight schools and approaching VCs in Saudi 16:11 Why every Saudi VC passed, and finding Athos Fund 17:46 Closing $1.25 million and what changed with local investors 19:29 How to pitch numbers, not passion, to investors 21:45 Where Saudi investment is flowing and why fintech dominates 23:38 The education market: budgets, privatization, and 6.5 million students 25:08 School density, government subsidies, and international operators entering Saudi 27:44 Why Saudis hold more certifications than anywhere else in the world 29:31 Will Saudi leaders fill every management layer by 2030? 31:01 What foreign companies consistently get wrong entering this market 33:11 What foreign investors should understand about the Saudi long game 34:24 What Yousef thought of Vision 2030 when it launched 36:38 NDTP, the SME mandate, and startup enablement in tenders 38:55 Where the untapped opportunities actually are 40:28 What Yousef wants Vision 2040 to say about education 42:16 The bigger dream: becoming the next Pearson, globally About Saudi Venture Hub Saudi Venture Hub is a Riyadh-based platform connecting international founders, operators, and investors with the people, partners, and context they need to build in Saudi Arabia.
