Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s first original live-action series for Netflix, showcases a new, grounded and gritty corner of the ever-connected Marvel Cinematic Universe. This groundbreaking series explores the character evolution of the mysterious man who, out of love for his neighborhood and his city, defends the residents of Hell’s Kitchen by fighting against forces compromising its prosperity and well-being. Out of those conditions a hero arises and through the struggles, Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock not only tries to save the city, but to varying degrees, himself. “The beauty of our collaboration with Netflix is that it allows us to remain true to the Marvel brand while exploring a darker, edgier, more mature corner of the Marvel universe than many fans are used to seeing,” says Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment. “Iron Man and The Avengers are saving the world. Daredevil is saving his neighborhood, saving a block, a building, a person. There may be aliens coming through a portal, but that’s not his business. Netflix offered us a vehicle to tell his story.” Overseeing the making of the series is executive producer and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight. A veteran of hit series including “Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.” “Steve DeKnight grabbed the ball and ran with it,” says Quesada. “He’s done an amazing job of taking us all the way to the goal line. Steve brings an incredible aesthetic and a real edginess to everything he does. He has a very keen eye and sensibility for action. In the world of streaming television, I don’t think you will find a series with the same amazing level of fight scenes and stunts as Marvel’s Daredevil.” DeKnight was unafraid to make the material his own, according to Jeph Loeb, head of television for Marvel Entertainment and one of the executive producers of Marvel’s Daredevil. “Steven immersed himself in it. His voice is very strong and that was important to us at Marvel. Many talented people worked on writing the comics over the years, but at the end of the day there’s no point in simply shooting a comic book. This has its own energy, its own origins, its own feelings. There are going to be surprises along the way. Even the most ardent Daredevil fan is going to be gleefully saying, ‘I never saw that coming.’” DeKnight, a Daredevil fan since childhood, relished the chance to bring the character to life in a way that hadn’t been possible before. “Working with Netflix, we had 13 hours to explore the inner workings of these characters in the way it hasn’t been done before,” he says. “We were able to dive into what drives Matt to go out every night and risk his life for his city and also explore the gray areas where he doesn’t necessarily do the right thing.
