Although the autograph manuscript has been lost, its contents survive through a facsimile copy. Because of its key of B minor, the work has often been associated with the aria Erbarme dich, mein Gott from the St. Matthew Passion and Es ist vollbracht! from the St. John Passion. It has also been suggested that the Prelude and Fugue may have served as the opening and closing organ music for the memorial service of Christiane Eberhardine, Electress of Saxony, held in Leipzig in 1727. The Prelude is a grand ritornello-form movement that combines Italian lyricism, French ornamentation, and the virtuosic pedal writing of the North German organ tradition. In contrast, the Fugue begins with a concise two-measure subject built from flowing eighth notes. It unfolds in three sections, with the central section played on the manuals alone. Three contrasting countersubjects are introduced in succession, and in the final section the principal subject and two countersubjects are combined to bring the work to a magnificent climax.
