Dry Needling Twitch Response Shoulder | Watch the Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Twitching!

You'll see a dry needling twitch response in the latissimus dorsi (lat) muscle of the shoulder. Lat dry needling is an effective shoulder pain treatment if you're experiencing latissimus dorsi pain or shoulder pain with latissimus dorsi involvement. If you watch closely you'll see what's called local twitch response (LTR) in the latissimus dorsi muscle as the needle is manipulated. The muscle twitch response is common when dry needling, but depending on what research you read, may or may not be necessary for a positive treatment outcome. I've seen shoulder pain and lat pain dissipate as quickly as one treatment. If you're wondering if dry needling may be a beneficial treatment for your latissimus dorsi pain, lat tightness, limited range of motion, or shoulder pain then I would encourage you to schedule an appointment with a chiropractor or PT near you that is trained in dry needling. Keep in mind, dry needling is not typically used as a stand-alone passive therapy. It's most effective when combined with a prescription of therapeutic exercises to do in the office or at home daily. There are, of course, alternatives to dry needling as well. Graston Technique or myofascial release can also help with pain in the latissimus dorsi muscle and get you feeling more comfortable and able to perform your home exercise prescription. I typically recommend patients with lat pain try conservative care like chiropractic care or PT first, but you could also go to an orthopedic MD as well. They're typically going to either refer to a chiropractor or PT first, or try medication, shots, and/or surgery if it's indicated. Trying the less invasive option first is usually best as more invasive options will still be available should treatment be a failure (which it's usually not!) Dry needling for lat pain and tightness doesn't have to be painful and can relieve should pain, tightness, and tension especially when used with other treatments like joint manipulation and rehab/therapeutic exercises.
