It's not too late to make split hives! In this video, Reinertsen shows us how to make a split late in the season, and how to get ready for the winter and harvest some honey at the same time. This particular process requires no waiting, so we are going through the hives like there's no tomorrow! Reinertsen splits the hive in two. He puts a new queen and some harvesting bees in the split, and places it in the mother-hive's place. The mother-hive is placed elsewhere. The bees tend to steal from each other, but Reinertsen assures us they won't burgle from a hive with many harvesting bees and a strong, egg-laying queen. But they won't leave the honey he is taking with him alone. Better get it home before the bees eat it up!
