Fleshing sheepskins is best done on a block or log using a blunt end or a two-handed scraper. Medium-sized skins can be successfully fleshed on a scythe. After fleshing, we proceed to the final degreasing step – washing the hides, preferably using highly effective detergents. Nowadays, a wide variety of detergents are available for tanning hides, including both domestic and imported products. Home tanning—including sheepskin, rabbit, fox, and beaver tanning—is a common practice. Home tanning, typically done at home, involves using more readily available but less effective detergents for degreasing. Degreasing is less effective, which affects the final result; home tanning is significantly inferior to factory tanning. After washing, the pickling process begins. Hide pickling. Pickling is carried out in acid solutions. Home tanning. Pickling is the most common method in tanning hides today. Sheepskin pickling is carried out with organic or mineral acids. I'll say this: using various acids, I haven't noticed much difference in tanning hides based on the acid used. Organic acids are considered the best: acetic, formic, and lactic, followed by sulfuric acid. Pickling is the action of acid on the hide, or more precisely, on the simple proteins that bind the collagen fibers in the leather. In this video, we pickle the hide with sulfuric acid and acetic acid. Pickling sheepskin, pickling rabbit skins, pickling muskrat skins, and pickling foxes are all examples of acid tanning. Pickling with vinegar is often used in tanning by novice tanners, mainly due to the availability of this acid. Tanning hides with formic acid. Experienced furriers prefer formic acid for its good penetrating properties. After pickling, they begin tanning the hides.
