EL BILBAO QUE PUDO SER (2) Metro de 1920. bilbao arquitectura 020

In the mid-19th century, one of the biggest problems facing large cities was urban transportation, especially regarding the movement of people between their homes and workplaces. Solutions had to be found with new public transportation systems. What was happening in Bilbao during those early decades of the 20th century? How did people get around in those years? Bilbao was a growing city, thanks mainly to the Ensanche expansion project of 1876, approaching 100,000 inhabitants, with significant industrial and commercial prosperity. It had an extensive tram network, which, however, was already insufficient to serve peak hours, resulting in frequent traffic jams and accidents involving carts and other vehicles. Given this situation, a novel project could have transformed public transportation in our city.
