He is best known as the lead singer of the band Héroes del Silencio. He began his musical career in the early 1980s, playing in the bands Apocalipsis, Rebel Waltz, Proceso Entropic, Zumo de Vidrio, and Niño del Brasil, though his breakthrough came as the frontman of Héroes del Silencio, a highly successful band considered by many to be one of the best Spanish rock bands. After the band's breakup in 1996, he launched his solo career the following year, establishing himself as a major figure in the Spanish and Latin American music scene. The singer's solo career, unlike that of Héroes del Silencio, has been very different in terms of musical sound. While maintaining the essence of rock, he has experimented with various rhythms, such as electronic and Arabic music in his early days, then moved through cabaret, ranchera, blues, flamenco, and tango, and even referenced genres like salsa, milonga, bolero, and cumbia in one of his latest works, where he pays homage to Latin America. In the list of "The 250 Best Ibero-American Rock Albums" by the American magazine Al Borde, his album Flamingos is ranked 81st, Pequeno 154th, and Radical Sonora 228th, in addition to his four studio albums with Héroes del Silencio: Senderos de Traicion (No. 5), Avalancha (No. 35), El Espíritu del Vino (No. 117), and El Mar No Cesa (No. 119). Enrique Bunbury also appeared at No. 119 on Rolling Stone magazine's list, published in September 2009, as the only singer with two albums among the ten most influential albums of the last 50 years in Spain. The two featured albums were Senderos de Traicion (1990) in second place and Flamingos (2002) in ninth place. In 2004, he was considered one of the most influential Spaniards by the newspaper El Mundo. The stage name Bunbury comes from a character in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, as he himself has confirmed in various interviews and in his biography, The Rest Is Silence, written by Pep Blay. Bunbury has collaborated on several documentaries, most notably 72 Hours... And Valencia Was the City, which narrates how a phenomenon that placed the city of Valencia at the forefront of social and musical life in those decades degenerated into the Ruta del Bakalao (the "bakalao route"). The film, by director Oscar Montón and producer Juan Carlos García, includes previously unseen footage recorded in these nightclubs to "pay homage to Valencian nightlife" and dispel the stereotype of "marginality" that has been attributed to it. He has also discussed his past with Héroes del Silencio and his relationship with the other members of the band in several works. In 2020, Fernando del Val accused Bunbury in his book The Bunbury Method of having copied verses from other authors in his lyrics without proper attribution, which sparked controversy. On February 28, 2022, the musician announced his retirement from the stage due to health problems, clarifying that the shows scheduled for later that year in Spain and the United States would be his last. After giving a couple of concerts in New York and Atlanta, on May 14, 2022, Enrique announced the cancellation of the remaining concerts of "El Último tour" (The Last Tour) due to the poor condition of his throat, ending his musical career on stage after 35 years. His health problems only affected live performances, so he continued his songwriting. In 2023, he announced the release of his twelfth studio LP, Greta Garbo, produced by Adan Jodorowsky and recorded in Mexico, using analog equipment at Desierto Casa Estudio.
