Sunny Summer Cycling Along Maryland Greenways & Hidden Paths Welcome back for another peaceful ride through Maryland greenways, neighborhood streets, shaded bike paths, and hidden trail connections. No racing, no training plans, and no power numbers to obsess over. Just a bicycle, a summer afternoon, and whatever adventures happen to unfold along the way. One of my favorite parts of this series is riding the same general route throughout the year. Even though many of the roads and trails are familiar, every ride tells a different story. The weather shifts, the trees change with the seasons, wildlife makes surprise appearances, and the occasional unexpected event keeps things interesting. Today’s weather was another reminder of why summer riding is hard to beat. It was definitely warm, but the sunshine, green scenery, and long daylight hours made for another beautiful evening to be outside. Sometimes the heat asks you to slow things down a little, and honestly, that’s not always a bad thing. The ride got interesting almost immediately when what looked like a potential car accident unfolded near the beginning of the route. Fortunately it appeared everyone avoided the worst, but it served as another reminder that staying alert is just as important as wearing a helmet. You can predict your own ride… everyone else’s is a little harder. With such nice weather, it seemed like the entire neighborhood had the same idea. Parks were busy, trails were full, families were out walking, and cyclists were everywhere. I ended up improvising parts of the route several times to avoid crowded sections and keep everyone comfortable. That’s one of the nice things about knowing these paths so well. There’s almost always another quiet street or hidden trail waiting around the next corner. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain. Somehow we’re both still hanging in there.
