How One Small Gas Valve Failure Blew Up America’s Largest Coke Oven Plant And Killed Its Workers

A single gas valve, smaller than a fire hydrant, was supposed to hold back the danger beneath America’s largest coke plant. Instead, it failed. Under the coke oven batteries at Clairton Coke Works, coke oven gas escaped into a basement packed with old iron, heat, pressure, and ignition sources. The blast tore through Batteries 13 and 14, sent black smoke into the sky, injured workers, and killed two men who had walked into the plant for what should have been routine maintenance. This is the story of how one gas isolation valve went from a 50 PSI rating to roughly 3,000 PSI — and how a century-old steelmaking giant was brought to its knees by one small piece of iron. We look at the coke ovens, the reversing room, the gas system, the maintenance decision, the workers caught inside it, and why Clairton was restarted even after the disaster. America was built on steel. But the men inside these plants paid the price. #IndustrialHistory #SteelIndustry #CokeOvens #ClairtonCokeWorks #GritHistory #IndustrialDisaster #WorkingClassHistory
