Técnica del Insecto Estéril (FAO ONU)

For over 50 years, a pest control method known as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has been successfully used worldwide to combat pests that destroy fruit and kill livestock. The method involves using radiation to sterilize male flies that are mass-reared in specialized facilities. Large numbers of these sterile male flies are then released into a target area, where they mate with wild female flies. They do not produce offspring, and over time, the wild fly population declines. Once established, this technique offers sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly insect control.
