It is often considered the second pillar of Islam alongside Sunni Islam, as they constitute the largest group of Muslims. The term "Shia" often refers to the Twelver Shia, as they are the most numerous sect. Sunni scholars, both past and present, agree that Shi'ism is an alien and foreign concept to Islam, an innovation within the Islamic faith. They maintain that no one known as a Shi'a existed during the time of the Prophet or during the caliphates of Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab. Ibn Hazm, however, believes that the first appearance of Shi'ism was towards the end of the reign of the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan. In his book, "Al-Fasl fi al-Ahwa' wa al-Milal wa al-Nihal" (The Decisive Word on Sects, Religions, and Schools of Thought), he states: "Then Uthman became caliph, and the conquests increased and the matter expanded. If someone had tried to count the copies of the Quran belonging to the Muslims, they would not have been able to. This continued for twelve years until his death.
