His mother had disappeared two days ago—perhaps drawing danger away to save her son—and now he was completely alone. A pack of hungry wolves was hot on his heels. These were seasoned forest hunters, their gray pelts blending with the shadows of the trees. Their cold yellow eyes were fixed on the clumsy brown bundle desperately scrambling with short paws. The cub could hear their hoarse howls and heavy, ragged breathing behind him. Every snap of a twig beneath the pursuers’ paws sounded like a death sentence.
