In this video, Professor Bairros shows why this swap isn't so simple. We'll start with the classic circuit with an NPN transistor switching a relay through ground and then analyze what happens when we try to use a PNP transistor instead. You'll understand why the NPN normally switches on the negative side, while the PNP must be used as a switch on the positive side of the load. We'll also see the big catch: when the microcontroller works with 5V and the load uses 12V, the Arduino output may not be able to correctly turn off the PNP transistor. In the end, we show the practical solution: using an auxiliary stage with an NPN transistor to correctly drive the PNP, ensuring that the relay turns on and off as it should.
