Sustainability isn't just about creating new, highly efficient buildings. Sometimes, just looking back reveals that many building concepts were already central to our ancestors' thinking centuries ago. For example, could the underground spaces used to cool rooms, found in Ferrara's Palazzo Costabili, inspire new constructions? Marta Calzolari explores new methods of sustainable architecture through interventions on historical heritage. Marta Calzolari is an architect with a PhD in Architectural Technology. She is a researcher at the Department of Architecture at the University of Ferrara and a member of the Architecture-Energy Research Center. Her research focuses on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency in the field of technological innovation for new construction, with a focus on lightweight construction systems, and in the environmental, functional, and energy retrofitting of existing buildings.
