Why CMC Works Better in High PVC Latex Paint Formulations?

In water-based latex paint systems, thickeners not only determine application viscosity, but also directly affect the overall formulation cost. In this video, LANDU compares the thickening efficiency and cost advantages of CMC and HEC through a visual laboratory test under the same base latex paint system. Under the same formulation conditions, equal dosages of CMC and HEC were added and fully dispersed through high-speed mixing. After standing and maturation, the samples were placed in a 25°C water bath until reaching a constant temperature to ensure stable viscosity performance. The KU viscosity test showed clear differences between the two cellulose thickeners: • CMC system: 100 KU at 4 g dosage • HEC system: 91 KU at 4 g dosage Further gradient testing confirmed that when the CMC dosage was reduced to 3.4 g, the KU viscosity remained stable at around 90 ± 0.5 KU, which is close to the viscosity performance of 4 g HEC. This means that in many engineering-grade latex paint formulations, CMC can provide higher thickening efficiency and greater potential for cost optimization. While meeting application requirements, CMC helps reduce the overall usage cost compared with HEC.
