Xiao Archives: The Estrada Inauguration part 2 of 2, the Inaugural Address at the Quirino Grandstand
Xiao Chua: Just a few days after the 100th birthday of the Nation, the Philippine Centennial, where the country gave a most splendid celebration, another important event for Philippine democracy happened again, a peaceful transition of power to the next leader. And not surprisingly because of this, the Inauguration of Joseph Ejercito Estrada on 30 June 1998 was one of the most meaningful and colorful inaugurals ever held, fit for a former movie star. Just like during the Philippine Centennial, I recorded the proceedings through VHS from my home in Tarlac City, I was in second year high school at that time. The first part, a video I requested from the Radio Television Malacanang (to replace my not so good copy) you will see the parade in Malolos, Bulacan and the oath-taking in Barasoain Church, commemorating the first Philippine Republic inaugurated almost a hundred years ago there. There, General Emilio Aguinaldo took his oath as president (Now we have a joke that those who take their oaths at Barasoain never get to finish their terms). The amiable political climate after the Fidel Ramos Presidency was demonstrated by the arrival of the various political and showbiz personalities from different persuasions coming together in one place. It was a once in history event. The second part shows another parade (!) and the Inaugural Address delivered by Estrada at the Luneta (also coming from RTVM). Then, my own recordings of news reports throughout the inauguration, various news reports of the proclamation and the first one hundred days, and also, the special documentary on Estrada's life and career that was shown after his proclamation as candidate of LAMMP and also in between his inaugural events that day. The documentary ends with the inaugural song of Estrada that goes like, "Sama-sama tayong babangon kay Pangulong Erap, bagong ama ng bayan, mahal ka ng mahirap." The video ends with a part of the music video of Magsimula Ka showing Estrada's rise played over RPN-9 after his inauguration. The Archive of the Xiao Chua Library now have the privilege to share to you those events through my YouTube page and I do hope it transports you back in time in such a very positive and hopeful event in our history and enjoy it as much as I always do. No copyright infringement intended, for educational purposes only. CTTO. I do not own this video, it belongs to the Republic and the Filipino people.
