Lecture 01 (2016) Transient heat transfer. Heat transfer by Prof Josua Meyer
This lecture starts with transient heat transfer (unsteady heat transfer). It describes where the work fits into the bigger field of heat transfer. Practical applications are discussed of where transient heat transfer is important to society and to engineers. It also discusses the different approaches that can be used to solve transient heat transfer systems and where the lumped system approach fits in. An equation is derived from first principles that can be used to solve the temperature as function of time of a lumped system. The limitation of this approach is, however, addressed in the following two lectures. This lecture is Lecture 01 (2016) of eight lectures that was based on the textbook of Cengel and Ghajar (5th edition) and was presented as part of a heat transfer class to the fourth year students of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering by Prof Josua Meyer, Head of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Lecture was presented on 1 February 2016.
