Adelaide 1983 Cold Case Solved - Police Needed Therapy After Witnessing This Crime

June 5th, 1983. North Adelaide, Australia. Fifteen-year-old Richard Kelvin walked his friend to the bus stop 200 yards from his front door. He was expected home for dinner. A security guard on the street heard cries for help, car doors slamming, and a loud exhaust speeding away. Richard was gone. His father Rob Kelvin was one of the most recognized faces in Adelaide — the trusted nightly news presenter for Channel 9. For the next seven weeks, while Rob Kelvin sat behind that news desk and read the stories of the day to South Australia, his 15-year-old son was alive somewhere in the city being held captive, drugged with four different sedatives and tortured by a man named Bevan Spencer Von Einem. When Richard's body was finally found on July 24th 1983 at a dirt airstrip in Kersbrook, he was wearing the same clothes he left home in — including a Channel 9 t-shirt. His father's network. He had been carefully washed, re-dressed, and placed in the fetal position on the ground. A dog collar was around his neck. Veteran Adelaide detectives said what they found that day never left them. The South Australian Premier called it among the most horrific crimes ever committed in the state. Von Einem was convicted of Richard's murder in 1984 and sentenced to life in prison. He was suspected of being part of a loosely connected group of men known as The Family — believed responsible for four other murders of young men between 1979 and 1983. He died in prison on December 5th 2025 at age 79, taking every secret with him. A one million dollar reward for information on the four remaining unsolved murders remains unclaimed to this day. Richard Kelvin was 15 years old. He had a girlfriend he planned to propose to when they were both 19. He had a future. He had 200 yards left to walk home.
