It belongs to the Midelt Province in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. The commune has a population of 13,292 in the rural area, while the population of the commune's center alone is 8,169, according to the 2014 General Census of Population and Housing.[5] This commune is known for its extremely low temperatures and heavy snowfall, and it is considered one of the richest Moroccan communes in terms of Atlas cedar forests. Etymology [edit] The commune's name is derived from the Berber word "Tenfi," meaning "that which is unseen," due to its hidden location between two mountain ranges: Mount Ayachi and Mount El Maaskar.[6] Geography [edit] The commune of Tounfite lies between Mount Ayachi (3757 meters above sea level) and Mount El Maaskar (3277 meters above sea level).[6] It is bordered to the south by the communes of Anemzi and Akdim, to the east by the commune of Ait Ayach, to the west by the communes of Sidi Ihya and Youssef, and to the north by the commune of Boumia. The commune of Tounfite is known for its cold continental climate during the winter, with temperatures dropping below freezing.[7] Due to its high altitude and mountainous terrain, ranging from 1900 meters to 3757 meters above sea level, the commune is home to the endangered Atlas cedar tree. The region encompasses several valleys that are tributaries of the Moulouya River basin.
