202606_Part-9: Between Dithmarschen and North Frisia_Husum - "Grey city by the sea"
We are traveling by motorhome along the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, heading from Meldorf Bay in the south to the Halligen islands in the north. Today, we are visiting Husum, a charming harbor town on the North Sea coast. The town is known for its maritime atmosphere, historic old town, and close connection to the Wadden Sea. Husum is often referred to as the "Grey Town by the Sea"—a name that originated with the famous writer Theodor Storm. Despite this nickname, the town feels lively, friendly, and welcoming. Our walking tour begins at the harbor, the town's centerpiece. It is a bustling place, with sailboats, fishing cutters, and excursion boats moored at the quays. Numerous cafés, restaurants, and small shops line the harbor promenade. Visitors stroll leisurely along the water, enjoying the fresh North Sea air and watching the boats. The colorful house facades reflected in the water give the harbor a picturesque appearance. It is just a stone's throw from the harbor to the Theodor Storm House. The famous poet's former home now serves as a museum. There, we learn a great deal about the life and works of Theodor Storm—the poet who rose to fame in April 1888 with the publication of The Rider on the White Horse (*Der Schimmelreiter*). Numerous exhibits, including furniture, books, and personal documents, offer insights into his creative work. Literature enthusiasts, in particular, appreciate this site, as it allows them to experience the author's world firsthand. Next, our route takes us to the market square, home to the Old Town Hall, the Asmussen-Woldsen Fountain, and St. Mary's Church. The square is distinguished by many historic buildings—such as the Schmidt fashion house. The Asmussen-Woldsen Fountain is dedicated to the two local benefactors of the same name and is affectionately known as the "Tine Fountain." The market square is framed by St. Mary's Church. The current grey brick church, dating from 1833, defines the cityscape with its brown copper spire. Inside, the church’s understated interior allows us to admire its historic furnishings, intricate ornamentation, and impressive organ. Apart from a painted epitaph of a pastor, the only item transferred from the old church to the new building was a bronze baptismal font donated in 1643. The shape of this gilded bronze casting is reminiscent of medieval baptismal fonts. Four seated figures of the Evangelists support the basin itself; its sides feature reliefs depicting the Baptism of Christ and the Apostles, as well as the coat of arms of the donor, administrator Marcus Lüders. Back in the market square, we encounter locals and visitors alike, while sidewalk cafés invite us to linger. Afterward, we explore the historic old town. Narrow alleys, cobblestone streets, and lovingly restored houses create a distinctive atmosphere. Many buildings date back centuries, telling the story of Husum’s long history. Small shops offer regional specialties, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Another highlight is the castle and its adjoining park. Dating back to the 16th century, it is the only castle on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast. The building impresses from the outside with its Renaissance architecture. A large park—featuring mature trees, well-kept paths, and colorful flowerbeds—stretches out around the castle. In spring, millions of crocuses transform the park into a sea of purple blossoms. All in all, Husum proves to be a diverse and lively city. Historic buildings, cultural attractions, proximity to the North Sea, and the unique landscape of the Wadden Sea make it a popular travel destination. The harbor, the castle, the Theodor Storm House, and the vast dike landscapes, in particular, convey an impressive sense of North Frisia’s history, culture, and nature.
