And if you watched some of our videos about d’Arienzo before, you will probably know that he's considered one of the Big-4 tango orchestras. The collaboration of Juan d’Arienzo and Rodolfo Biagi, from 1935, marked the beginning of the Epoca d’Oro, the Golden Age of tango. By the end of the 1930s, d’Arienzo’s orchestra had become the most successful and most popular tango orchestra around, together with singer Alberto Echagüe, and with Juan Polito on piano. But early 1940, just before they were to perform at the carnival in Montevideo, his entire orchestra and star singer Echagüe quit, and d’Arienzo had to form a new line up. Within a month d’Arienzo found a new orchestra, with Héctor Varela on bandoneon, Cayetano Puglisi violin, and Fulvio Salamanca (who was only 18) piano. And two brand new singers. One of them was Alberto Reynal, the stage name of Enzo Gagliostro, born in Buenos Aires in 1908. He died early, in 1947, at the age of 39. Reynal isn’t one of d’Arienzo’s most famous singers, but they did record 16 tracks together in two years time, including 11 tangos and a fun waltz (A una mujer). Three of these tangos are included in this tanda of the week: First, it’s ‘Almanaque de Ilusión’, recorded in 1941. Music written by Nicolás Tavarozzi, lyrics by Héctor Marcó. It’s a song about a love that was very short lived: they met on Monday, fell in love, but within a week everything fell apart. Alberto Reynal only sings the chorus of this tango, like a true estribillo singer. And Fulvio Salamanca is clearly present on piano. The second track is ‘Chirusa’, recorded in 1940. Juan d’Arienzo wrote the music and the lyrics are by Nolo López. It’s actually the second time that d’Arienzo recorded this song, the first time was in 1928, with singer Carlos Dante. Chirusa was the prettiest of all girls in the suburbio, and she ran away from home to follow some Don Juan. Blinded by desire for a life of luxury. Surely that couldn’t end well… The third track is 'El corazón me engañó', music and lyrics written by Miguel Bucino. Bucino was a composer, lyricist, bandoneon player, and tango dancer. He briefly played the bandoneon with Francisco Canaro. 'El corazón me enganó' starts with a very typical d’Arienzo intro. Salamanca is banging the piano and then the violin enters, played by Cayetano Puglisi. And Reynal sings: My heart deceived me… The final track is 'Ríe, payaso'. One of only two tangos that d’Arienzo recorded with singer Carlos Casares. Music written Virgilio Carmona, lyrics by Emilio Falero. Casares’ term with d’Arienzo was short-lived: in less than a year he was replaced by the much more famous Héctor Mauré. Still, Casares left us 'Ríe payaso'. A great recording that has become rather popular in recent years. Full of energy, full speed ahead. And that’s our d'Arienzo tanda of the week: 1. Almanaque de Ilusión (Reynal, 1941) 2. Chirusa (Reynal, 1940) 3. El corazón me engañó (Reynal, 1940) 4. Ríe, payaso (Cacares, 1940) Enjoy! Please note: We do not own the music in this video.
