Küsten des Nordens (6/6): Vom Darß nach Usedom | Dokuserie über Nord- und Ostsee

The sixth and final episode takes us from Groß Mohrdorf via Stralsund to the island of Rügen and on to Usedom. In the evening, cranes gather in the lagoon waters of the Darß peninsula. They rest here on their way south. In September, when thousands of cranes darken the sky, ornithologist Silke Fregin is drawn to Groß Mohrdorf to observe these large and graceful birds. It was planned as the world's largest holiday resort for 20,000 vacationers. But the state-subsidized mass vacation never came to fruition. Construction was halted at the outbreak of World War II. Today, the buildings are listed as historical monuments and cannot be demolished. The white houses of Binz's seaside resort architecture, on the other hand, shine particularly brightly from the air. Here, a Swabian Michelin-starred chef serves his 14 guests freshly caught Baltic Sea fish. This has earned him, his beach restaurant "niXe" in Binz, and the island of Rügen its first Michelin star. Only a few people have access to the island of Vilm, which has formed one of the core zones of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve since 1990. Artists like Caspar David Friedrich once sought inspiration here, and the island was a vacation spot for Erich Honecker. Today, a photographer uses the pristine landscape for shots with his camera obscura. The journey continues across the Greifswald Bodden to Lubmin, passing the Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant, once the pride of the GDR's energy industry. In the Baltic Sea off Lubmin, a Swedish shipwreck, sunk here in 1715 and now obstructing the Baltic Sea pipeline between Russia and Germany, is being raised. The final leg of the journey along the northern coast concludes with the majestic flight of white-tailed eagles that have survived on the island of Usedom.
