Doc Watson Trick for Forward Drive
One of Doc Watson’s greatest strengths was forward drive — that feeling that the music is leaning ahead with energy. Here’s a simple timing shift he used often, including at the end of "Black Mountain Rag": Instead of playing two quarter notes across two beats, play the same two notes as eighth notes in beat 1, and use beat 2 for movement — often a ghost strum or a light motion of the hand. What this creates: ✔ Forward drive ✔ Energy in bass runs ✔ A lively Carter Style feel ✔ A more exciting bluegrass break Small change — big momentum. Very Doc Watson. Very bluegrass. *** Want more lessons and tabs? ➤ Free Flatpicking Guitar 101 Video Course Build strong foundations with my beginner crash course: 👉 https://bit.ly/4isGBmG ➤ Join our Flatpicking Guitar Community Connect with fellow guitar lovers, share progress, and ask questions: 👉 https://bit.ly/4jJlj5o ➤ Come to my Acoustic Guitar Camp in the Italian Alps Learn, jam, and be inspired in the mountains of Falcade: 👉 https://bit.ly/4lCyw1j *** Welcome to my flatpicking guitar channel!
