In 1907, inside a collapsed watchtower on the edge of the Chinese desert, an explorer found a leather mailbag of letters that had never been sent — sealed, addressed, and abandoned for over sixteen hundred years. One of them was written by a Sogdian merchant's wife, stranded and starving in a foreign land, telling her husband she would rather marry a dog than him — and it never reached him at all. This is the story of the Silk Road not as kings and empires knew it, but as the ordinary merchants who crossed it in the dark actually lived it.
