Voices Raised to Protect Hackney’s Heritage at Risk

In this walk, led by Rob Briggs, Chair of The Hackney Society’s Buildings at Risk Group, we explore how some of Stoke Newington’s most cherished historic landmarks have been at risk over the years, and the role local people have played in saving them. The walk begins in Clissold Park, which was saved by a Preservation Committee in 1886–88, before continuing along Stoke Newington Church Street and through Abney Park Cemetery. It ends at St Michael and All Angels’ Church by Stoke Newington Common, one of Hackney’s entries on Historic England’s current Heritage at Risk Register. Rob Briggs is a Hackney resident with several years’ experience working in the heritage sector. Many local places look the way they do today because people have campaigned to protect much-loved buildings, parks and landmarks. This walk looks at past examples of local action, while also considering how people can get involved in protecting heritage sites that remain at risk today.
