The Nations Championship, a global rugby tournament, is being held for the first time this year. Twelve countries are participating: the six Northern Hemisphere Six Nations nations, the four Southern Hemisphere Championship nations, plus Fiji and Japan. In July, the Northern Hemisphere nations will tour, and in November, the Southern Hemisphere nations (Japan is treated as a Southern Hemisphere nation) will tour the Northern Hemisphere. The tournament culminates in the first-ever "Finals Weekend," where the champion and the final standings of all teams will be determined. Japan's first match is against Italy, a team that has dramatically improved in recent years.
