According to Vinacam, the quality of exported agricultural products such as durian, jackfruit, and bananas is currently being contaminated with heavy metals, particularly cadmium (Cd). This poses a direct threat, potentially wiping out many industries and plunging tens of thousands of farmers into hardship. This problem is most serious in the Mekong Delta region, particularly in Tien Giang and Dong Thap (formerly). However, current management practices have loopholes and inadequacies that prevent a fundamental solution to the problem of cadmium residue in the soil and exceeding permissible levels in agricultural products.
