Chevrolet D-20 - Evolução e Fim
The story of one of Brazil's best pickup trucks, the Chevrolet D-20, manufactured between the 1980s and 1990s, replaced the older Chevrolet D-10, a direct competitor to the Ford F-1000. Its reputation for quality, robustness, and durability is a hallmark of Brazilian automotive history. One of the best vintage pickup trucks of all time, it has a cult following since GM's founding in Brazil under the Chevrolet brand in 1925. Its first national pickup truck, the Chevrolet Brasil, was launched in the 1950s. Its successful pickup line included the new model, the C-14 family (in 1964), which would be renamed the C-10 (in 1973), and in 1978, would give rise to the famous D-10. In 1985, the new pickup truck, the D-20, was launched. With a much more modern look, the overall look was harmonious, with two rectangular headlights, the same as the Opala, and the popular decorative stripes on the sides. The new family of pickups also included the A-20 and C-20, powered by alcohol and gasoline, respectively, which used the same 4.1-liter engine as the Opala. The D-20 had a naturally aspirated Perkins diesel engine, 3.9 liters and 86 horsepower (Q20B4 - 86.4 horsepower, 27 kgfm), the same used in the previous D-10. With ample interior space, the D20 had a wraparound dashboard with comprehensive instrumentation, including a tachometer and an engine hour meter. There was room for a radio and ventilation system, and air conditioning was optional. The pickup also shared the same steering wheel as the Opala. It came in two versions: the basic and the Custom. Using the Chevrolet D-20 pickup trucks as a base, Brasinca designed the Passo Fino and Manga Larga pickups in 1986. In mid-1988, they were officially adopted by Chevrolet, launching them under the Bonanza and Veraneio names. Brasinca, in turn, launched two new models: the Andaluz double cab and the Quarto de Milha extended cab. In 1988, the Custom S and Custom DeLuxe versions of the D-20 also emerged. In 1992, the engine was replaced by the more modern Iochpe-Maxion S4, a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter with 92 hp (28 kg), and the S4T, a turbocharged 120 hp (38.2 kg). In 1992, the models were offered in the Custom S (Standard) model, which featured a simpler finish, and the Custom DeLuxe model, with a more luxurious finish. The first version of the Conquest was also introduced. This version came equipped with large rearview mirrors, a spy light on the outside of the cabin (the same as the D40), white wheels, exclusive fabric seats, and blue and green side stripes. In addition to the optional extras found on the DeLuxe version, it also featured a bed protector and a tonneau cover. Due to the anti-corrosive treatment applied before painting, the 1985-92 models became known for their greater corrosion resistance. In 1993, the D20s received a new front end and dashboard, modernizing their appearance. However, they began to be manufactured in partnership with Argentine automakers, resulting in the Champ 1 and El Camino versions. In late 1995, the engine was upgraded and renamed Turbo Plus. With 150 hp, it became the most powerful option available in the Brazilian market, surpassing its rival, the F-1000. In 1995, production was transferred to Argentina, and in 1997, General Motors discontinued the pickup and its sister models. The D-20, once the most powerful on the market, gave way to a new model, the Silverado. CONTACT: [email protected] FACEBOOK: / qravolantao
